Clear Channel cues up mobile radio applications

Broadcast media giant Clear Channel Radio announced a suite of free interactive mobile applications that further extend its local station brands onto the wireless platform. Beginning today, New York City radio stations WHTZ-FM Z100, WAXQ-FM Q104.3, WKTU-FM 103.5, WWPR-FM Power 105.1 and WLTW-FM 106.7 will enable listeners to send text messages to make requests and dedications, receive SMS alerts before a favorite song plays, participate in contests and view the last 10 songs played. Listeners can also sign up for alerts on breaking music news and scheduled in-studio performances, interviews and contests–related services include traffic updates, station-specific trivia and opinion polls. Clear Channel will also make available wallpapers featuring station logos and DJs, and in July will introduce format-specific ringtones.

According to Clear Channel, similar programs will launch on up to 100 more of its radio stations by the end of 2008, beginning with outlets in Salt Lake City and St. Louis. “By making these applications available for free via any cellular phone carrier, Clear Channel Radio is monumentally expanding access to its growing mobile content portfolio,” said John Hogan, Chief Executive Officer of Clear Channel Radio. “Each application allows users to have an individualized, on-demand experience, which will strengthen listeners’ connection with their favorite radio stations.”
