Telekom Networks Malawi’s launches W-CDMA network

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Telekom Networks Malawi’s (TNM) subscribers can now access services such as video calling, mobile TV and high speed internet offering download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps as the Malawian telecoms operator has launched its W-CDMA/HSDPA network.

Initially the service will be available only to the post-paid subscribers but pre-paid customers will soon have access to the service. According to Charles Kamoto, head of TNM’s Commercial Services division, 3.5G technology is launched in order to provide top-notch services to its customers in Malawi.

With a market share of 32% till September 30 2009, TNM is Malawi’s second largest cellco by subscribers. Zain Malawi is the only competitor of the company with 68% share of customers.

Zain Malawi gets 3G Licence.

MACRA has awarded a 3G licence to Zain Malawi, which is expected to enhance high-speed wireless internet access.

Zain marketing director, Enwell Kadango confirmed that discussions that started between the company and MACRA since 2006 has finally borne fruit as its licence conditions have now been changed.
3G is the telecommunication hardware standard and general technology for the mobile networking superseding 2.5G system which will now allow speed in data processing,” said Kadango who added that Malawi is taking after most developing countries that are using this technology.
Currently Zain Malawi is about to finish its equipment installation across the country which will be compatible with the new system which offers fast downloading speeds of between 2-8mbps.
Malawi’s Zain CEO Fayaz King said 3G would also allow users to watch television besides connecting to the internet and make video calls.
TNM Limited Zain’s competitor in the market got the licence sometime back but it is only now that the company has been testing it.

Zain Malawi announces nine new coverage sites for uninterrupted services (Malawi)

Zain Malawi, announces additional nine coverage sites across the nation in a bid for improved quality and delivery of service for it’s one million subscribers nationwide.
Zain which is currently spending US$30 million, will have spent nearlty US$100 million, by the end of 2009, towards the expansion and upgradation of the network to ensure it’s coverage to every part of Malawi.
According to Zain Malawi’s Marketing Director, Enwell Kadango, there are 5 new capacity sites and 5 additional base stations in central and southern region of the nation, part of the upgradation process.
“The new coverage sites underscore the company’s commitment to give customers modern and world class network services in line with its strategy of becoming one of the top 10 telecommunications brands in the world,” he said.
The celco has appointed versatile network experts from Sweden, Germany and Japan working towards speedy integration of new softwares and hardwares for better quality and uninterrupted services for it’s subscribers.
The upgradation process is likely to end in September, and aims to accomodate nearly 3 million subscribers.
