www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Telekom Networks Malawi’s (TNM) subscribers can now access services such as video calling, mobile TV and high speed internet offering download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps as the Malawian telecoms operator has launched its W-CDMA/HSDPA network.

Initially the service will be available only to the post-paid subscribers but pre-paid customers will soon have access to the service. According to Charles Kamoto, head of TNM’s Commercial Services division, 3.5G technology is launched in order to provide top-notch services to its customers in Malawi.

With a market share of 32% till September 30 2009, TNM is Malawi’s second largest cellco by subscribers. Zain Malawi is the only competitor of the company with 68% share of customers.

Zain Malawi gets 3G Licence.

MACRA has awarded a 3G licence to Zain Malawi, which is expected to enhance high-speed wireless internet access.

Zain marketing director, Enwell Kadango confirmed that discussions that started between the company and MACRA since 2006 has finally borne fruit as its licence conditions have now been changed.
“3G is the telecommunication hardware standard and general technology for the mobile networking superseding 2.5G system which will now allow speed in data processing,” said Kadango who added that Malawi is taking after most developing countries that are using this technology.
Currently Zain Malawi is about to finish its equipment installation across the country which will be compatible with the new system which offers fast downloading speeds of between 2-8mbps.
Malawi’s Zain CEO Fayaz King said 3G would also allow users to watch television besides connecting to the internet and make video calls.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: In July, 2009 Nar Mobile has entered into GPRS roaming agreements with numerous countries worldwide.
The last roaming agreements have been entered into between Nar Mobile and mobile operators Tele 2 (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), Viva (Kuwait), Eagle Mobile (Albania), Wataniya Telecom (Maldives), Globe Telecom (Philippines).
Nar Mobile now has GPRS roaming agreements with 95 mobile operators in 60 countries worldwide.
These roaming agreements have been signed in order to fully meet the costumers’ needs of the mobile operator while being overseas.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The Kosovo Post and Telecom, PTK, grabs the fourth Albanian mobile licence, as no other firm could fulfil the criteria for the tender. The consortium of PTK and other partners have offered over EUR 7 million for the licence and are likely to announce further investments in the network. PTK, through its mobile operator Vala, is the market leader in Kosovo. The company will compete against Vodafone, OTE’s subsidiary AMC and Eagle Mobile in Albania.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Huawei Technologies and Eagle Mobile have inked the investment plan agreement for this year, priced at US$ 20 million for the network of Albanian operator Eagle Mobile.  Huawei Albania is developing the communication networks in Albania through cooperation with Eagle Mobile.Eagle Mobile signed up 258 000 subscribers by December 2008. Presently, the operator has 410 000 subscribers throughout the country.

Eagle Mobile, the new entrant in wireless market has picked Telenity’s advanced messaging solutions including Canvas SMSC, Short Message Service Center and Canvas USSD Service Center to handle its rapidly growing messaging traffic and enable the introduction of new USSD and SMS-based innovative services. ‘As a new operator in the Albanian market, its extremely vital for us to build a reputation as a reliable and innovative service provider. Telenity’s SMSC will significantly improve our ability to gracefully handle SMS traffic peaks and offer higher service quality to our subscribers,’ said Ali Taskin, CEO at Eagle Mobile. Eagle Mobile had a subscriber base of 260,000 at end of 2008.

Alabanian Telecom minister Sokol Olldashi announces October as the deadline for the country’s three wireless network operators to slash their tariffs by 20%.
The desicion for the reduction came after the Telecommunication Regulation Agency (ERT) which lowers interconnection rates between mobile operators.
The minister also announces the opening of an international tender for the country’s fourth wireless licence in October, to compete with the established trio of Vodafone, AMC and Eagle Mobile.
