www.WirelessFederation.com/news: According to a notice released by the Federal Trade Commission, the USA antitrust regulators have reportedly approved a proposed merger of Sprint Nextel and Virgin Mobile USA worth $483 million. It was in July that Sprint announced the acquisition of Virgin Mobile. In buying Virgin Mobile, Sprint is taking over one of its wireless resellers and gaining a pay-as-you-go option that rounds out its low-end offering.

The deal could be subject to review by the Federal Communications Commission.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Sprint Nextel, the USA based mobile operator, has slashed the monthly service price for its CDMA/mobile WiMAX service from $79.99 per month to $69.99 per month, and is throwing in a free month of service as an extra bonus. The price cut has come a week after the operator launched mobile WiMAX service in Las Vegas, Atlanta and Portland. Including Baltimore, the carrier now offers its Sprint 4G-branded service, which includes roaming onto its 3G CDMA network, in four markets.
According to market analysts, the Sprint’s price cut is viewed as “slightly positive,” adding that the new price “is more palatable to prosumers and consumers during these tough economic times. … These initiatives considerably reduce the cost barriers to adoption, increasing the carrier’s potential consumer base.” The firm also pointed out that Sprint is offering its 3G/4G USB Modem U300 for free with a two-year service contract and $50 mail-in rebate, down from an initial price of $149 in December.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: ZTE, the Chinese equipment and handset vendor, is reportedly grounding its feet more firmly in USA mobile market now. The company which already has established relationships with Sprint Nextel and MetroPCS, launched a new global roaming USB modem with Verizon Wireless. The vendor is further developing a handset based on Android OS for the Asian markets which it also intends to bring to the USA mobile market in collaboration with carriers, along with other high-end devices. ZTE, further, plans to be the first to offer LTE devices in the United States.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Sprint, the first national wireless carrier to test, launch and market 4G technology, is extending its 4G leadership by launching the next-generation service across the country. Today, it announced the addition of 17 new markets to its national Sprint 4G roll-out plans. These additional markets join the previously announced markets of Atlanta; Chicago; Dallas-Fort Worth; Honolulu; Las Vegas; Portland, Ore.; Philadelphia and Seattle.

The new additions for 2009 are: Abilene, Texas; Amarillo, Texas; Austin, Texas; Boise, Idaho; Bellingham, Wash.; Charlotte, N.C.; Corpus Christi, Texas; Greensboro, N.C.; Killeen-Temple, Texas; Lubbock, Texas; Maui, Hawaii; Midland-Odessa, Texas; Raleigh, N.C.; Salem, Ore.; San Antonio, Texas; Waco, Texas; and Wichita Falls, Texas.

Sprint also expects to launch service in multiple markets in 2010, including Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

These markets will join Baltimore, where Sprint made history when it launched 4G in September 2008. As previously announced, Sprint 4G is scheduled for an August 2009 launch in Atlanta, Las Vegas and Portland, making the cities among the first in America to experience the lightning-fast speeds of the first wireless mobile 4G network from a national carrier. Additional information about launch plans and services in those cities will be announced soon.

Sprint 4G offers turbo-charged mobile broadband – with peak download speeds of more than 10 Mbps and average downlink speeds of 3-6 Mbps. Sprint 4G speeds and capabilities are three to five times faster than the 3G service offered by any national wireless carrier today, based on average download speeds.

Sprint was also the first carrier to offer wireless access to both 3G and 4G with the 3G/4G USB Modem U300 in December 2008. Last week, Sprint expanded its 4G product offering with the announcement of its new Sprint 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Routers: The Sprint Personal Hotspot PHS300S Router and the Cradlepoint MBR-1000 Broadband Router for business. Used in combination with the U300 or other Sprint mobile broadband devices, these Mobile Broadband Routers can simultaneously connect smartphones, laptops and other WiFi-enable devices to the Sprint 3G and 4G networks. Sprint is harnessing the power of 4G through its partnership with, and majority ownership of, Clearwire, an independent company that is building the WiMAX network. Sprint is the only national wireless carrier to offer 4G services on the Clearwire WiMAX network.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: AT&T will make a payment of $59 million to Sprint Nextel for spectrum swap in parts of Colorado, Oklahoma, Florida and elsewhere. The spectrum swap between the two operators received approval by the FCC and Sprint disclosed the value of the transaction in its recent 10-Q filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
“The spectrum swap mentioned in the Q is of a type that has been a common practice in the industry–carriers trade/sell bits and pieces of spectrum to each other in areas where a carrier has an excess of capacity,” reportedly said in an interview. “In this case, the transaction involved the exchange of some Sprint 10 MHz licenses in Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, Kalamazoo, Pueblo (CO), Bend (OR), Routt County (CO) and Grand County (CO) for AT&T’s 5 MHz license in Tampa, 2.5 MHz license in Knoxville and some cash.”

In a filing with the FCC, AT&T said “the additional spectrum will enable AT&T to increase its system capacity to enhance existing services, better accommodate its overall growth, and facilitate the provision of additional products and services to the public in the areas of Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Oklahoma. … The additional spectrum will also facilitate AT&T’s continued deployment of GSM/EDGE and HSDPA/UMTS technologies.”

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: SK Telecom, the South Korean mobile operator, has reportedly said that it will vend its 15.3% stake Virgin Mobile USA completely to Sprint Nextel. This announcement was made after Sprint unveiled that it will acquire Virgin Mobile USA is a stock swap deal, under which it will buyout all the major shareholders. Lauren Kim, a spokeswoman at SK Telecom, said that the company’s stake in Virgin Mobile would be diluted to below 1% from 15.3% following Sprint’s acquisition of the mobile operator. “This means there is no strategic value for us so SK Telecom has decided to sell the entire stake when market conditions are favorable,” said Kim. SK Telecom has not yet decided on the price of the stake but the sale will slim down the chances of the South Korean telco to spread its wings in the USA.
