Telecom Italia is creating a new network management division, in an attempt to pre-empt regulatory action forcing it separate its network assets. The new Technology & Operations division will be headed by Stefano Pileri. It will focus on four activities, including: maintaining and delivering services over the access network infrastructure; technical planning, construction and maintenance for the telecommunications network; management of network IT systems; and supervision of all group technical infrastructure (real estate and plant) and facilities management. The operator said the new division will operate “completely autonomously and separately” from the group’s commercial activities and ensure more efficient access to the network for both internal and external customers, in line with the market regulator AgCom’s recommendations. Telecom Italia also announced plans for a new chief information officer in charge of the IT division, which is part of the Technology & Operations division. The operator has already been in talks with AgCom on access network, and the Italian government has proposed legislation giving AgCom the power to impose functional separation.
