Telenor has started its first WiMAX deployment, to residents and owners of summer houses on the Trondelag coast in Norway. The operator will use WiMAX to provide services to outlying areas that cannot be covered by ADSL. In addition to the private market, the company plans to offer broadband services to fish farming plants and other industries in the coastal area. Telenor has bought 36 frequency blocks for WiMAX, which is sufficient to cover the whole country, and signed a contract with Airspan Networks for the supply of WiMAX base stations. The broadband service will initially offer speeds of up to 2 Mbps, while Telenor also plans a later launch of voice services over the WiMAX network.
