Canadian mobile operator Telus is considering switching to GSM technology and abandoning its CDMA service. Industry sources told the Toronto Star that the company could start adopting the new technology as early as this year. The idea “has been presented at the board level and is being actively considered,” said one source familiar with the situation. Analysts estimate the changeover could cost the company around CAD 500 million. A Telus spokesperson declined to comment. A switch would put it in closer competition with Rogers Wireless, which already operates a national GSM network. The other main rival, Bell, also uses CDMA.
