Turkcell has won an auction for a 3G licence in Turkey, reports AP from a live televised auction. The mobile operator was the only bidder, initially offering EUR 311 million, but then raising its bid to EUR 321 million after a request from officials running the auction. Turkcell CEO Sureyya Ciliv said the company aims to quickly roll-out the technology across the country. The government was expected to issue four 3G licences, but according to local press reports the three other licences were cancelled due to no interested bidders. The other mobile operators Avea and Vodafone did not bid, while Vodafone has said it wants number portability implemented first before 3G starts.
