Al Yah Satellite Communications, a subsidiary of the UAE’s Mubadala Development Company, has awarded a contract for a two-satellite communications system to a consortium including EADS Astrium and Thales Alenia Space. The contract is worth USD 1.66 billion. The consortium will design and construct Yahsat’s two satellites, which will be launched within months of one another in the second half of 2010. Yahsat will offer services to the broadcast, internet, telecom and government sectors, across the Middle East, Afrtica, Europe and southwest Asia. The operational life of the satellites is estimated at 15 years.
